Now that we are going to have a Liberal Democrat as our 44th President with a large Democrat majority in Congress it is likely that many on the left will fall for the logical fallacy that a Liberal Majority with a Liberal President is a mandate from the American people to take America to the left.
Well, if anyone here has assumed that then I would recommend that they not jump to any such conclusions. The truth is that, ideologically, this Country is about exactly where it was in 2004 which was a great year for the Republicans, and I have the statistics to prove it.
According to the CNN Exit Polls from the 2004 election Liberals made up 21% of the electorate while Conservatives were at 34%. Moderates made up 45%. (Click here).
— Now, four years later the numbers from the current CNN Exit Polls are about the same: In the 2008 election, Liberals now make up 22% of the vote, moderates make up 44%, and Conservatives still outnumber liberals at 34%. (Click here) So it is absolutely obvious that we, as a nation, are still moderate to Conservative.
So from this it is important that President Barack Obama and the enlarged Democrat congress not take this election as a permission slip to take this country to the left. If they do then 2010 will be Obama’s version of what happened to George W. Bush in 2006 when the Republicans lost power in the midterms. It is imperative, but not likely, that Obama govern as a Moderate and not as a leftist.
Obama has to realize that even though he won in traditionally Conservative and Republican territory that the votes he got there were not just handed to him. They were lent to him.
If we look at the Exit polls, a major reason why John McCain lost the election was that he lost 20% of the Conservatives to Obama. — It is doubtful that the Conservatives that voted for Obama would like Obama to govern as a left-winger. More than likely they are hoping he will be a moderate President. If Obama disappoints them then they will abandon him for whoever is the Republican nominee in 2012 and will vote for a more Conservative congress in 2010.
We also have to remember the moderates -those in the center. When these people see one candidate as too extreme then they tend to go for the more moderate of the two major candidates. In other words, if Obama governs from the far left then this particular voting block (which voted 60% to 39% for Obama) will abandon him. — Or if they stay with him, it will be by a much lesser margin next time around.
The fact is that Obama and the Democrats only won this time because the American people are frustrated at the status quo (and rightfully so) and decided to take it out on those who have been in power for the last eight years. — But back on the subject, if Obama governs as a Liberal, I highly doubt that he is going to win in the long run. But with the Democrat majority in congress that he will have as President I don’t think he will be able to resist the urge.
